Kuas Student, Koichi Morota, Makes It Through the First Round of the Mitou Program

Koichi MOROTA, a 2nd year student of the KUAS Faculty of Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Electrical Systems Engineering, successfully passed through the first round of the "2021 Exploratory IT Human Resources Project (The MITOU Program)", which is seen as a gateway to success for top-tier talent entering Japanese industry. This is even more impressive as he was only in 1st year at the time of his application.

This program started in 2000 as part of a development project for young creators sponsored by the Information-technology Promotion Agency, Japan. The aim of the program is to discover and nurture creators who have original ideas, skills, and abilities, and who can create innovations in software-related fields. Every year, top-class students, including graduate students from national universities, compete in this program.

The project proposed by Koichi for this year’s program was called the "P-MASK (Privacy Mask)". He developed a video processing application that uses deep learning to easily carry out privacy-protection of video content. In the first round, from 130 applicants, Koichi was successfully chosen to progress to the next round.

In the final round, Koichi’s project regrettably was not chosen, but he spoke with enthusiasm about his participation saying that "it was a great experience to apply for the competition and get comments directly from judges who represent the industry on areas that I could improve. I would definitely like to try again next year."
