Chungwoon University is a private university located in the western coast of South Korea. It has two campuses: the main campus is in Hongseong and the other one is in Inchon. In 1995, a 4-year college named Chungnam Sanup University (then renamed as Chungwoon University on July 1st, 1998) was founded by late Mr. Jong-Sung Lee, the chairman of Chungnam Spinning Co. Ltd., and the member of the National Assembly.
Chungwoon University comprises six colleges and one graduate school. The student body consists of nearly 6,000 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. In Hongseong Campus there are College of Humanities and Social Science; College of Health, Welfare and Nursing; College of Performing Arts and Media and Design; and College of Hotel and Tourism. Inchon Campus has College of Engineering and College of Business Administration.
With a firm will and determination, the University has made great progress since its establishment. The broadcasting sector was selected for the Local University Specialization Project promoted by the Ministry of Education. The University then received annual subsidies from the government from 1997 to 2001. The broadcasting sector of the University was also chosen for the government-led Local University Development Project and received a subsidy from the government from 2002 to 2003, which led to the opening of the Broadcasting Media Education Center (BMEC) in 2004.
The University is extending its influence even to the world. The University established sisterhood with 52 international universities in 11 countries such as the U.S.A, China, Japan, Vietnam, Australia, the Philippines, Denmark, and Laos. Based on both the spirit of foundation and the Local University Specialization Project, the university has educated students trusted by the Ministry of Education with an agreement with public and private sectors in Seoul, Incheon and the Kyeonggi province since 2008.
The University has a plan to change as a university in the seat of a provincial government to seize the chance of the relocation of the provincial office of Chungnam in 2012, and the establishment of Incheon Campus makes it possible to build the base for fostering creative talents. The university specializes the College of Performing Arts and Media for educating students andall around artists. The College is further divided into 6 departments: Department of Acting, Department Musical, Department of Performing Arts Management, Department of Applied Music, Department of Broadcasting and Film, and Department of Media Communication.
The Department of Acting programme provides a range of resources and techniques for students to explore, helping each individual actor and actress to grow and mature. The curriculum proceeds from a deep exploration of the text and takes students through both rigorous training and free improvisation. Working primarily in laboratory situations, it demands meticulous training of the voice, physical dexterity, a keen analytical mind, and the willingness to discover new approaches to acting. Ensemble work and collaboration are fundamental to the training while constant individual attention is provided to monitor each student’s individual progress. The training offered at Chungwoon University provides students with the skill set necessary to succeed in classical, contemporary, modern and experimental theatre, as well as in television, and film.
