The ADSE Department aspires to become a centre of excellence in education and research in smart manufacturing, systems engineering, and semiconductor manufacturing. It serves as a collaboration platform for developing cross-disciplinary academic programmes and interdisciplinary research projects at CityU.
The Department of Advanced Design and Systems Engineering (ADSE) offers a single major, the BEng in Intelligent Manufacturing Engineering. This major emphas the integration of intelligent manufacturing systems, modeling and optimization, artificial intelligence, industrial big data, industrial Internet of Things, automation and robotics, management analytics and advanced manufacturing technologies. This multi-disciplinary programme aims to produce graduates who are capable of using cutting-edge engineering knowledge, computational, experimental and analytical techniques to plan, design, implement and improve technology-based manufacturing and operations systems.
The curriculum provides the students with systematic training in systems engineering, with a focus on intelligent manufacturing. Specifically, the GE and College required courses equip students with the necessary background in English, basic science and computer programming. The major core courses are divided into three blocks, namely, the Core Technology block, Integration Block and Application Block. The Core Technology Block includes the scientific principles, knowledge and application in disciplines of industrial systems engineering, electronics and semiconductor, and advanced manufacturing technologies. The Integration Block emphas the integration of cutting-edge knowledge and up-to-date applications, particularly in data analytics, intelligent manufacturing systems and Industry 4.0. The Application Block provides practice opportunities and industrial experience to the students with the Engineering Workshop, Final-year project, Industrial attachment and Internship. The major electives offer an opportunity for students to broaden or deepen their knowledge in different disciplines of electronics, manufacturing technology, and industrial systems engineering.
The BEng in Systems Engineering and Management (BENG SEM) aims to nurture students' analytic and managerial skills in understanding, analyzing, managing and improving modern enterprises and systems, grounded in engineering principles and scientific methods.
A BENG SEM student is trained to become an analytic and versatile engineering graduate with the right skill-sets for the management and improvement in the operations and processes of a modern enterprise, and its projects, products and services, in the world of globalized production and boundary-less information flow. An enterprise under consideration include engineering, industrial, government, and service-oriented organization.
Fundamental science and engineering: In the first year of your study, you will take courses in university level mathematics, essential computer studies and fundamental engineering sciences, as well as courses in general education studies and language proficiency. These courses form an important foundation of a solid engineering education;
Essentials of systems/industrial engineering and engineering management: In the subsequent years of your study, you will enroll in a set of required courses, covering essential systems/industrial engineering and engineering management topics such as operations/logistics management, quality engineering/management, statistics/data analytics, and ergonomics/work design. These courses give you the knowledge and ability in analyzing, managing and improving the operations, processes, products and services of enterprises;
Beyond the required courses: This major offers elective courses to further enhance your breadth and depth in systems/industrial engineering and engineering management. Moreover, this major offers two specially designed optional streams that provide additional breadths in topics highly relevant to improving modern enterprises:
Optional Data Analytics Stream
A set of courses that equip students with statistical and computing knowledge in Data Analytics and Data Science for discovering insights in enterprise data.
