About Program

In keeping with the Liberal Arts mission of Lingnan, Visual Studies emphasises transferable skills and a whole-person approach to education. Visual Studies adopts a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to the study of art, aesthetics, and visual expression and its appreciation. Experiential learning is an integral part of the curriculum and central to the studio, internship, and service learning courses. A well-established Artist-in-Residence programme, involving local as well as non-local artists, provides ample opportunities for active engagement with the art world.
AIMS

To provide students with a grounding in art history, philosophical aesthetics, cognitive film studies and museum studies, and to develop students’ capacity to make cross-disciplinary connections amongst these areas through an issues-oriented approach;
To provide students with opportunities to engage in research expression, understood as the exploration of research questions through art practice;
To foster values that result in lifelong engagement with creativity, art and community.

Lingnan University (LU) is a liberal arts university in Hong Kong with the longest established tradition among the local institutions of higher education. The University’s history dates back to 1888, when the forerunner, the Christian College in China, was founded in Guangzhou, and to 1967, when the institution, as Lingnan College, was re-established in Hong Kong and renamed Lingnan University in 1999.

Locally, LU received the highest score among the eight UGC-funded universities regarding “undergraduate satisfaction with the quality and value which they have gained from their teaching and learning experience” in the University Grants Committee’s University Accountability Agreements annual progress report 2019. This has been the second consecutive year in which the University came top in the area based on evaluation by students.
