The Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Science (PGDipAppSc) is a two semester programme, which builds on an undergraduate Applied Science degree. It allows people who are currently working to undertake blocks of study - one block for the certificate, a second block to complete the diploma. Alternatively, students may wish to complete the 120 point programme in a continuous run. What is bioengineering?Bioengineering is rooted in physics, mathematics, chemistry, biology, and the life sciences. It is a multi-disciplinary approach to the systematic, quantitative, and integrative methods of developing solutions to problems important in biology, medical research, and clinical proactive and population studies.A PhD within the Centre can be highly rewarding as the projects involve applying basic science to real problems. PhD students can either enroll at the University of Otago or a collaborating institution. We also provide a Master of Applied Science in Bioengineering.
Our academics and clinicians are active researchers and provide learning based on the latest research across four of the bioengineering activities.A major component of this course is completing a substantial period of work experience or a placement within an organisation in an area or field of work that is of interest to the student.Structure of the ProgrammeThe programme of study: i. shall consist of approved 400- and 500-level papers, to the value of 120 points, selected from the papers specified in Science Schedule D for the Master of Applied Science subject concerned.ii. shall normally include papers from more than one subject and at least one of the approved 400-level papers that shall be amongst the first papers taken in the programme of study.iii. may, with the approval of the Head of Department or Course Director concerned, include papers worth up to 40 points from 400- and 500-level papers other than those specified in Science Schedule D.A candidate who has completed the requirements for the Postgraduate Certificate in Applied Science shall be exempted from those papers in the programme for the diploma which have been previously passed for the certificate.
