Electrical engineering develops devices and processes that make modern life safer and easier.
The field of electrical engineering directs its interest to a broad spectrum of topics including energy supply, information transmission, robotics, medical technology, and automatization technology.
In order to do this spectrum justice, RWTH has unified two disciplines into a single course of study: Electrical Engineering and Information Technology.
The combination of these two fields opens up a variety of possibilities to students and offers them a high degree of both field-specific and cross-disciplinary flexibility.
Students receive a technical foundation comprised of thorough and demanding basic training in mathematics, physics, computer science, and key electrical engineering topics. They can call upon these later when faced with specific tasks.
After their concentrated, fundamental studies, students select one of four specializations offered:
- Energy Engineering (ET) focuses on safe, ecological energy supply, creating the technical prerequisites needed for the energy transition.
Information and Communication Technology (IC) optimizes signal processing and transmission, mobile information systems, and their functional interconnection. - Micro- and Nanoelectronics (ME) takes into account the need for smaller and smaller building components and coatings. The field is currently conducting research on two-dimensional storage elements.
- Biomedical Engineering develops (BMT) solutions for problem areas in medicine with the help of techniques or machinery, for example improving medical imaging or cardiac pacemakers.
