Acupuncture has been practiced in China for thousands of years. Today, it is a regulated health profession in Alberta and a popular alternative and complementary treatment choice for acute and chronic illness.
This program prepares you to become a Registered Acupuncturist in Alberta, subject to successful completion of the Pan-Canadian and provincial registration examinations administered by the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta (CAAA). We are proud to be the only public, post-secondary program of this kind in the province that has been approved by Alberta Advanced Education.
In this 3-year diploma, you study the diagnosis and therapeutic treatment of a wide variety of illnesses and disorders in accordance with the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) system.
Our curriculum is based on the latest national and international standards of competency to ensure your skills and knowledge are global. MacEwan University’s Acupuncture program serves as the benchmark for registration in Alberta and we are proud to be the only public, post-secondary program of this kind approved by Alberta Advanced Education.
What to expect
Modern scientific study confirms that acupuncture induces biochemical changes in the body that have beneficial effects and can facilitate healing. Under the guidance of experienced clinicians, you learn to work with the body’s energy as it flows along well-defined pathways in the body called meridians. Your training allows you to balance energy flow at the appropriate meridians to prevent and treat illness.
Your courses in acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine are taught by registered acupuncturists. You will also study basic bio-medical sciences—human anatomy, physiology, microbiology and internal medicine—taught by professionals and experts in their related fields.
