About Program

Students will learn how to manage and coordinate people to achieve strategic business objectives. Human resource management includes staff recruitment and selection, employee relations management, staff training, job evaluation, change management and occupational health and safety.
Aims and objectives
Drawing on the resource based view which draws attention to how organisations might leverage their workforce to gain competitive advantage, the Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) focuses on HRM as the driver of innovation and high performance in the workplace.
The HRM major seeks to strike a balance between the need for practical skills and knowledge, and the need to instill in students the theoretical acumen, and conceptual thought and understanding necessary to work in the area of human resource management.
HRM skills can lead to career opportunities in business administration, education, instructional technology, organisational development, human services, communication, public administration, or within specialist human resources agencies.
Upon successfully completing the Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) students will be able to:

Define and integrate theoretical principles applicable to business and apply those principles in a range of practices
Systematically review and critically evaluate research from a variety of sources in order to make informed judgments on options for innovatively solving a range of problems that arise in business contexts
Formulate creative solutions that are fit for purpose and demonstrate cognizance of the impact of business decisions on the triple bottom line
Coherently articulate a line of reasoning demonstrating cultural sensitivity and apply a framework to analyze and offer solutions to ethical dilemmas
Communicate a range of business arguments by evaluating and implementing alternative communication strategies as appropriate to the audience
Build on and continuously develop the intellectual independence to be critical and reflective learners, cognizant of new technologies
Work collaboratively in diverse groups.

Course structure
For completion of the Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management) students are required to complete a total of 24 units (300 credit points) consisting of:


Eight [8] prescribed Bachelor of Business core units (100 credit points)
Eight [8] units of study from the Human Resource Management discipline major (100 credit points)
Eight [8] units of Secondary studies (100 credit points) comprising of a second major, co-major, minor/s, or electives

Once students have completed their degree, students may seek employment in many areas, including human resources, training and talent management, recruitment, change management, quality coordination, occupational health and safety, employee relations, enterprise bargaining, change management and job evaluation. Opportunities are available in nearly every business in every sector.

This degree has been specifically designed for students seeking recognition by the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI).

The Sarawak campus opened in Kuching, the capital city of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, in 2000. The campus is a partnership between Swinburne Australia and the Sarawak government. The campus is part of a long-term strategy by Swinburne Australia, established in 1908, to globalize its operations and provide its students with international living, working and learning opportunities.

Since it was first set up, Swinburne Sarawak has been growing rapidly. The custom-designed campus has a current student population of 4,000. Apart from Malaysia, students hail from more than 60 countries, making it a truly international university.

Only 15 minutes away from the heart of Kuching city and nestled within commercial and residential areas, the 16.5-acre campus offers Australian degrees in arts, business, computing, design, engineering, and science that are identical to those of its home campus in Australia. Also offered are postgraduate coursework and research programs at PhD and masters levels. Also included is the one-year foundation programs in business, design, information technology/multimedia, engineering and science. A range of English language proficiency programs are also available.

Students may complete their degrees entirely in Kuching or transfer to its main campus in Melbourne.
