Athlone Institute of Technology is becoming the next Technological University in Ireland: Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands Midwest.

Athlone Institute of Technology is a modern, dynamic higher education institution distinguished by outstanding learner experience, international focus, distinctive regional contribution and high quality impact of its staff, teaching, applied research and innovation.

AIT has retained its position as Ireland's top-ranked institute of technology in The Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021, the official league table benchmarking the country's 19 higher education institutions.

This is the second consecutive year that AIT has finished top of its class, having previously won The Sunday Times Institute of Technology of the Year in 2020. The third-level institute also held the prestigious title in 2018 and came runner-up in 2017.The institute’s inclusive campus culture and student-centred ethos are among the reasons for its success.

Student experience scores play a critical role in influencing The Sunday Times rankings for third-level institutes. Introduced into the adjudication criteria in 2018, student experience has the heaviest weighting, giving students direct input into where their college ranks.

AIT has continually elicited the highest participation rates of any third-level provider in, a national survey which considers the holistic student experience, since its inception seven years ago; its students repeatedly report the highest levels of satisfaction with their third-level experience nationally.

Established by the Irish Government in 1970, AIT is situated in the heart of Ireland and is a leader in innovation, applied teaching and student welfare. AIT’s strength comes from identifying areas of skills shortage and working with businesses to improve links between enterprise and academia.

AIT is home to 6,000 students undertaking a broad range of programmes from certificate level to PhD in the domains of business, hospitality, engineering, informatics, science, health, social science and design. Over 15% of the full-time student population come from overseas with 80 plus nationalities represented, reflecting the globalised nature of its campus. The institute’s global focus is also evident in the 230 partnerships and agreements it has signed with universities and research institutions around the world.

AIT is sitting in joint 4th position, tied with DCU in the national league table of innovation partnership projects. AIT has an attractive modern campus which has received investment of more than €150 million since 2000.

AIT offers various undergraduate and postgraduate full-time courses with affordable fees.

Athlone town:

Athlone is located in the centre of Ireland and is often referred to as the “Heart of Ireland”. It has a population of 30,000 people and is just over one-hour’s drive from the capital city, Dublin.

Large employers in Athlone include Alkermes plc, Ericsson, Covidien, Utah Medical, M&C Specialities, IO Systems, One Direct, Telefex and KCI Medical to name a few.

Athlone is a busy and prosperous town with an abundance of interesting tourist attractions. The town is situated on the River Shannon, the largest river in Ireland and Britain, offering excellent sporting and leisure facilities. Athlone and the surrounding area has so much to offer – both bustling urban and tranquil rural locations including rivers, lakes and beautiful woodland, all waiting to be explored.

Athlone offers affordable quality student rental accommodation which is approximately 50% lower than Dublin and some other cities in Ireland. The cost of living in Athlone varies from student to student, but in general it is affordable and a student would need between €600.00 and €650.00 per month for living expenses. This includes rent, insurance, food, bills, leisure etc.

Ireland is an extremely safe and friendly country (12th Safest in World according to Global Peace Index 2019). International students can avail of the favourable work policies in Ireland throughout their study and after graduation. Students can take up part-time work up to twenty hours per week during academic term and forty hours during the semester break. The minimum wage in Ireland is €10.10 per hour. Ireland allows its International graduates the opportunity to stay back for one year after graduation at Honours degree level and two years after Masters degree level.
